What is Disc Golf?

Many people are familiar with the traditional game of golf but not as many are familiar with the sport of disc golf.  Disc golf is played in a similar way as traditional golf. Disc golf has a flying disc rather than golf clubs and you can play 9 or 18 holes.  Both sports have tee boxes to start the game with the goal to get through the course in as few strokes as possible.  Just like golf clubs a player will have a bag with multiple discs that have a specific function.  A player will have a putter disc, mid-range disc, long-range and the list goes on and on.  Each course will have different par levels with different ranges of difficulty and topography changes.  Just like traditional golf, disc golf also has the element of weather to contend with, such as wind direction.

After a player tees off from the tee box, they will spot where their disc lands and continue play from that location.  There are out of limit areas just like in traditional golf. Players will have to get their disc around shrubs, trees, and contend with changes of the topography to land in a basket.  Once the disc lands in the basket, the hole is completed.

What do I need to get started?

Many players will want to start off with a carrying bag and a few discs.  If you are just starting out, make sure you grab a putter, long-range and mid-range disc.  Be prepared, just like with golf balls, there is a chance you will lose your disc.  Mark the inside of each disc with your name and phone number.  It is an easy way to identify your disc when searching.  That is all you need to play the game.

Search for a local course and start practicing.  Many courses offer leagues on specific days so you can play with others that have the same passion for the sport.  You can learn throwing techniques, insight on which discs are good to purchase and so forth. To play the game, usually, it is free to play.  If you join a league, many times they charge a small fee to play in the league.  Unlike traditional golf, you will not need a cart, green fees or get stuck with a tee time.  Just show up and play.  This sport is great for all ages.  It is great exercise, family time and the list goes on and on.  You can have fun playing no matter what your age or skill level.

Etiquette of Playing

Just like in all sports, there are rules to learn so the game is safe and fun. Here are a few tips on what to expect if you are a patron enjoying the park where a course is located as well as if you are playing the game.

Player's Etiquette

  • Never throw when players or park users are within range of your throw.  Patrons of the park always have the right of way.
  • The player with the least amount of strokes on the previous hole is the first to tee off on the next hole.
  • Remain quiet while others are throwing.
  • Stand behind the player throwing until they have completed their throw.
  • Allow faster groups to play through.
  • Keep all trash in a bag and discard at the end of play.  Keep the park in order for future players.
  • Do not alter the course in any way. Don't remove tree limbs, brushes, etc to create a better path for your throw.
Park Patron Course Etiquette
  • Be aware of your surroundings if using a public park that is also a disc golf course.
  • Players will yell "Four" if a disc is headed your way.  Stop and look in their direction to protect yourself from being hit by a disc.
  • Never pick up a disc you see laying on the ground.  Discs fly a long distance and the player may not have made it to their disc to mark their spot yet.
  • Try not to walk in the path or allow kids to play in the path of tee boxes or baskets.  It is safer to stay off the course if possible.
