What You Need To Know About Renting a Boat

One of the highlights of visiting the Lake of the Ozarks is the Lake itself. People come here from all over the country to experience the Lake environment. From slowly puttering down the channel catching some sun, finding a quiet cove where they can catch the fish that won't get away, or get some speed on a wake boat learning how to surf! At Keys to the Lake, we specialize in helping you to have a great time, and part of the way we do that is by showing you what you need to enjoy your Lake of the Ozarks vacation. Here are a few things to know about boat rentals, and how you can get started!

Where Can I Rent a Boat?

If you've never been to the Lake, and you don't already have a favorite company to work with there are a few ways you can start the relationship. You can do an internet search for boat rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks, and find a company through that search. If you still don't know who you'd like to work with, here are a few marina suggestions to get you started:

  • Glencove Marina
  • Captain Mike Fink's Marina
  • Tan-Tar-A Resort Marina
  • WFO Watercraft Rentals
  • Dirty Duck Rentals
  • AAA Party Cove Watercraft Rentals
  • Lake of the Ozarks Marina
  • Lake of the Ozarks State Park Marina

Are There Any Laws Related to Operating a Boat?

In Missouri, if you were born after January 1st, 1984, you are required to have a boater's certification card in order to operate the craft. You can get certified online here: https://www.boat-ed.com/missouri/boating_law.html. The good news is, that all states, provinces, and territories will recognize boating education cards that meet NASBLA requirements. If you are still uncertain about this, call your rental company first to make sure that you will be able to operate your boat when you arrive.

What Boat Should I Get?

This all depends on what you want to do on your boat. If you and your guests just want to go slowly from cove to cove and pull a small raft or inflatable with you for entertainment, then a pontoon may be perfect for you. There are many styles of pontoons, from party boats to fishing boats, so if you need special requirements, like a pop-up changing room, or a fish tank for you catch, you'll want to specify that when you secure your rental. If you are coming down to catch the fish of a lifetime, you may want to find a fishing boat. While you can fish from any boat, some boats are rigged especially for you and your hobbies. You can also look into a wake boat - which is made for speed and strength as it pulls Intertubes, wakeboards, and skis. If this is your first time renting and you don't know what you want do even do on your boat, speak with your rental company. They are trained to answer your questions and help provide you with the best service possible.

How Can I transport My Boat?

Depending on the company that you're working with, some will actually deliver your boat to the dock at your Lake of the Ozarks vacation rental! They will also additionally pick it back up after you're finished with it. It's important to clarify these details before reserving your boat and putting any deposits down, though. If you thought that they delivered, and the thought you were picking it up, that could put a damper on your boating plans for the day.

At Keys to the Lake, we take your vacation seriously enough that we want to make sure you can have every detail planned in advance. From your lodging to your meals, we know you'll find everything you need at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we look forward to providing you and your family with exceptional service. In fact, after staying with us, you may find that you want to get some more permanent Keys to the Lake, and buy a vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks, or maybe even relocate to the Lake of the Ozarks!
